Image-related issues

The Carrelet Image Library system provides a potentially powerful tool for managing graphical resources. However, some planning is required to optimise its effectiveness.

Local or Shared?

If one person is managing several accounts, it probably makes sense to put most of the images in the shared library. That way he can move and share images between accounts. If on the other hand several people are involved, it makes sense to use the local accounts for images that are of no interest to people working on other parts of the site, and to share only those images which are likely to be reused.

Captions

Because Carrelet can include captions automatically, and because different accounts can use shared images, some discipline is required to avoid one person editing the captions to suit one situation and thus unwittingly publishing this caption elsewhere on the site. The captions in the image library should be short and factual, and should normally only be edited by the person who uploaded the image. More idiosyncratic captions can be applied using the text-based image commands (Cliquez ici).

Deleting images

If images that are in use are deleted, they will 'break' links wherever that image is used. Webmasters should therefore check carefully before deleting images from their own accounts' image libraries. In the case of the shared library, extreme care and some consultation is recommended.
